Named on Purpose
And [Mary] will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins. Matthew 1:21
Did you know that most names have meanings? For example, David means “beloved,” and Sarah means “princess.” Your name might have a special meaning too! Ask your parents why they chose your name.
God was very purposeful when He chose the name Jesus. The name Jesus comes from the Hebrew name Yeshua, which means “the Lord saves” or “the Lord is salvation.” So every time someone said Jesus’ name, they were actually saying “Savior”!
The angel told Joseph, “You shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.” See how the name matches His mission? Jesus came to save people! Not to save them from their enemies or from being poor but to save them from the biggest problem everyone has—sin.
Long before Jesus was born, the prophet Isaiah wrote about Him in chapter 53 of his book. Isaiah said that the Messiah would take our sins on Himself and be punished in our place. Jesus’ whole purpose for coming to earth was written right in His name: to be our Savior!
Take Action: Let’s make this really personal! Write this sentence on a piece of paper and fill in your own name in the blank: “Jesus came to save _____________ from sin!” That’s YOU! Jesus didn’t just come to save people in general—He came to save YOU specifically! Color around your sentence, decorate it, and put it somewhere special. Then thank Jesus for loving you so much that He came to be YOUR Savior!

PARTNER WITH us

As a father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, the importance of family has always been a core value in my life. I have been a pastor for decades, watching families grow and generation after generation come up in faith. That is why Bible Strong Kids is so important to me. What better legacy to leave for our children and grandchildren than to raise them up in faith, strengthening them for the journey ahead all the way into adulthood?
I hope you will join us in this endeavor to create the next generation of Bible Strong Kids—children who know their worth in God’s eyes and are equipped to shine His light in an increasingly dark world.
