Love the Hard to Love

If someone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen, how can he love God whom he has not seen? 1 John 4:20

Do you know someone who’s just…difficult? Maybe they’re bossy or mean or annoying. There’s probably at least one person in your life who gets on your nerves! In the Bible, there was a man named Nabal. Even his NAME meant “fool”! He was rich, but he was really mean and selfish. Even his own wife said he was a wicked person! When King David (who would become one of the greatest kings ever) asked Nabal politely for some food for his men, Nabal was super rude and said “No....

In the Bible, there was a man named Nabal. Even his NAME meant “fool”! He was rich, but he was really mean and selfish. Even his own wife said he was a wicked person! When King David (who would become one of the greatest kings ever) asked Nabal politely for some food for his men, Nabal was super rude and said “No.” David got so angry that he was ready to fight him!

But Nabal’s wife, Abigail, was wise and kind. She quickly brought food to David and his men and asked David to forgive her husband. She convinced David not to do something he would regret. And you know what? God took care of the Nabal situation in His own way and in His own time.

The Bible says that if we say we love God but hate other people, we are liars! Ouch—that’s pretty serious! It’s easy to love people who are nice to us (everyone does that!). But loving people who are difficult? That takes God’s help! And that’s what God asks those who love and follow Him to do!

Here’s the amazing thing to remember: Jesus loved us when we were hard to love! Even when we sinned and turned away from God, Jesus loved us enough to die for us. And He can help us love the “Nabals” in our lives too!

Take Action: Think of someone in your life who’s hard to love. Maybe they’re mean to you, annoy you, or did something that hurt your feelings. This week pray for that person every single day! Ask God to bless them and help them. You might be amazed at how praying for them changes YOUR heart toward them. And remember, Jesus is asking you to love them—not necessarily be their best friend or let them treat you badly but to want good things for them and treat them with kindness. With Jesus’ help, you can do it!

PARTNER WITH us

As a father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, the importance of family has always been a core value in my life. I have been a pastor for decades, watching families grow and generation after generation come up in faith. That is why Bible Strong Kids is so important to me. What better legacy to leave for our children and grandchildren than to raise them up in faith, strengthening them for the journey ahead all the way into adulthood?

I hope you will join us in this endeavor to create the next generation of Bible Strong Kids—children who know their worth in God’s eyes and are equipped to shine His light in an increasingly dark world.
