Tug-of-War Inside
For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. Romans 8:5
Have you ever promised yourself you’d stop doing something, and then did it again five minutes later? You know the right thing to do. So why is it so hard to do it? Believe it or not, the apostle Paul felt the exact same way! He wrote that he kept doing the things he didn’t want to do and not doing the things he did want to do (Romans 7:15). Paul was one of the greatest Christians who ever lived, and he still struggled with this.
Here’s why: it’s like there’s a tug-of-war going on inside you. On one side is what the Bible calls “the flesh.” That’s the part of you that wants its own way, no matter what. On the other side is the Holy Spirit. When you believe in Jesus, God’s Spirit comes to live inside you and helps you want what God wants.
Whichever side you pay attention to is the side that wins. The Bible says to “set your mind” on the things of the Spirit. That’s like choosing which team to pull for. When you pray, read God’s Word, and ask the Holy Spirit to help you, His side gets stronger. And when the Holy Spirit is winning, you’ll start to see awesome things grow in your life, like love, joy, peace, patience, and kindness (Galatians 5:22-23).
Think About It: Where does the tug-of-war feel the hardest for you? Is it with your temper, telling the truth, being patient, or something else? What could you do right before that moment to help the Spirit’s side pull harder?

PARTNER WITH us

As a father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, the importance of family has always been a core value in my life. I have been a pastor for decades, watching families grow and generation after generation come up in faith. That is why Bible Strong Kids is so important to me. What better legacy to leave for our children and grandchildren than to raise them up in faith, strengthening them for the journey ahead all the way into adulthood?
I hope you will join us in this endeavor to create the next generation of Bible Strong Kids—children who know their worth in God’s eyes and are equipped to shine His light in an increasingly dark world.
