Remember the first time you jumped off the diving board? Or rode your bike without training wheels? Or walked into a brand-new classroom where you didn’t know anybody? Doing something for the first time can be scary! But it gets a lot easier when someone you trust says, “Don’t worry. I’ll be right there with you.”

Joshua had a big “first time” coming up. Moses had led God’s people for forty years, and now it was Joshua’s turn to be in charge. That’s a lot of people to lead! He had every reason to be nervous.

But here’s something cool about Joshua. For years, he had been Moses’ helper. He had watched God split the Red Sea. He had seen God send food from heaven every morning and water out of a rock. Joshua had seen with his own eyes how God took care of Moses. So when God said, “As I was with Moses, so I will be with you,” Joshua knew exactly what that meant. It meant God was going to do amazing things for him too!

You start something new with God every single day. Maybe tomorrow it’s a big test, a tryout, or a doctor’s visit. Whatever it is, remember this: the same God who was with you yesterday will be with you tomorrow. And He’s not going anywhere.

Take Action: Think of one new or scary thing you have coming up soon. Tell a parent or grown-up about it, and ask them to pray with you. Then ask them a question: “Can you tell me about a time when God was with you when you were nervous?” Listening to their story is a great way to see how God keeps His promise.
